Hawaiian endemics
Endemism is the ecological term for restricted geographic distribution on the planet. Endemic species are those that occur naturally within a limited geographic context such as an island or groups of islands. Hawaii has many species that are found nowhere else on earth. The extreme isolation of the Hawaiian and Johnston islands near the center of the tropical north Pacific Ocean far from other lands has resulted in a high proportion of endemic species many of which are threatened by competition from introduced species.
